These handbags are currently known as "telephone" or "phone" cord bags, but other than the first ad below, there is little or no reference to them being called such in their marketing. While many who are interested in vintage fashion believe these materials (plastics) were used during wartime shortages of leather, most of these bags seem to have been produced (and/or sold) during the 1950s, after WWII. It's also interesting to note that they were made as late as 1960, when many collectors assume these to be products of the 1940s.
