The Vintage Purse Museum was very happy to acquire a Gherardini handbag. The Gherardini company, founded in Florence, Italy in 1885, still makes fine quality handbags. This beauty, which we date to the 1960s-1970s, came with a tag that indicated it was from the estate of legendary actress/dancer Ginger Rogers (misspelled on the tag). We did not purchase it from the estate sale, so we didn't want to say that it belonged to her without verification. We contacted the director of the Owens-Rogers Museum, who very kindly put us in touch with Ms. Rogers' former assistant. She told us that, while there was, indeed, an estate sale after Ms. Rogers passed away in 1995, she could not say for sure if this was her bag, only that it was possible.
If you have a photo of Ms. Rogers holding this bag, please let us know. We would love to post it here, and will give full credit to the photo's owner/photographer.
A huge thank you to the director of the Owens-Rogers Museum and to Ms. Rogers' assistant for being so gracious.
NOTE: We have one more avenue we are currently investigating and will update if there is further information.
