Clovis Ruffin for Genie Raffia Clutch - With Designer Bio

Colorful raffia clutch by Clovis Ruffin for Genie, mid to late 1970s. Born in Clovis, New Mexico in 1945, Ruffin grew up knowing he was destined to be a star. He dropped out of college, traveled the world and eventually moved to Hollywood to achieve stardom. Instead, he found work as a photo-shoot stylist for top clothing designers. Because of his eye for detail, by age 26 he had his own fashion line, Ruffinwear, which garnered him a special Coty (fashion) Award. He loved bright color combined with simplicity, and preferred garments with a minimum of seams and closures. His other lines included "Clovis" and "Ruffinknit," Among his notable designs was a t-shirt dress with a Matisse print that retailed for $35 in 1975. Ruffin passed away in 1992 at age 46.
